If you have no insurance, look up your nearest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). They charge on a sliding scale. I paid $20 for a full visit including labs.

After 3 years of being told my fibroid pain was "just bad periods," I finally found a Black gynecologist who ordered an ultrasound at the first appointment. I had 7 fibroids. You deserve to be believed.

I used the Bias Translator before my rheumatology appointment. The doctor ordered every test I asked for. First time in 4 years I felt taken seriously.

As a Black physician: when a provider dismisses you, ask them to document their reasoning in your chart. This changes behavior immediately. You have that right.

Postpartum depression almost took me out. My OB kept saying I was "just tired." It was my mother who finally got me to the ER. I am here, I am recovering, and I want other mamas to know — it is real and treatable.
🛡️ Walk in prepared

Appointment Armor

Black women's concerns are dismissed at disproportionate rates. This prepares you to walk into any appointment with language, documentation, and confidence to demand the care you deserve.

1
Document your symptoms first
Write down exactly when symptoms started, severity 1–10, and what makes them better or worse. Objective data is harder to dismiss.
2
Use the Bias Translator before you go
Convert your plain language into clinical terminology. Providers respond differently when you use the right words.
3
Ask for everything in writing
Say: "Can you document that in my chart?" for every concern. A paper trail creates accountability.
4
Bring someone if you can
A witness changes the dynamic. They can take notes, ask follow-up questions, and confirm what was said.
Your Patient Rights
You have the right to a second opinion — always, for any reason, no explanation needed
You have the right to request specific tests — ask "what would rule this out?" if dismissed
You have the right to see your medical records — request them in writing
You have the right to refuse treatment — and to ask about all your options
You have the right to file a complaint — against any provider who dismisses or disrespects you
Your Appointment Summary
Patient-prepared symptom summaryI am experiencing persistent symptoms affecting my daily functioning. I am requesting a complete workup and ask that these concerns be documented in my chart.

I am requesting: Complete blood count, thyroid panel, vitamin D, B12, and ferritin levels.

Please note: If my concerns are not addressed today, I will be seeking a second opinion.
